SOLVED: The Honeywell LR (old) has 7 wires connected

The boiler thermostat is one of the most important devices in the home, yet it is often overlooked. This relatively small device is responsible for controlling the level of heat in your home during the cooler months. In the past, boiler-thermostat wiring used to be rated for volts, but now modern systems are rated for 24 volts. Modern thermostats are capable of controlling both heating and air conditioning, and they can be programmed based on the energy needs of the home. By learning the basics of this system, you can replace or install a thermostat at a fraction of the cost of hiring a contractor. Use the wire snake to pull the wire through closed walls and into your attic or basement depending on the type of home you are working in. From there, you should have a clean run through the attic, then down the boiler room wall.

How to Install a Thermostat for Split Air Conditioning System

Yes you can do this if you: I get this question a lot in my emails and wanted to address it. The time and materials it would take to change an air conditioner into a heat pump are not worth it. You would be better off having a new heat pump installed replacing the old air conditioning unit. It would be a good lesson in metering devices for air conditioners and heat pumps.

It would also be a good lesson in finding all the appropriate parts for the size and model number of the air conditioner equipment.

Here is a link to the wiring diagram for my heat pump. The thermostat that I am planning on buying has the following terminals C, G, Y, O/B, RC, R, Aux, E, and L. The instructions say to jump the RC and R together after you connect the R wire. On the wiring diagram I can see where the the R, Y, G, and O wires match up on the Heat pump(HP) and the thermostat(TS).

Always follow manufacturers instructions for both the thermostat and the HVAC system. Additional articles on this site concerning thermostats and wiring can help you solve your problem or correctly wire a new thermostat. These charts and diagrams only represent the basic system. It is possible your system is equipped with additional HVAC components such as a humidifier or electronic air cleaner. Depending on the manufacturer and the designer of the components will depend on how the additional components are wired or integrated into your system or thermostat.

It corresponds to the chart below to explain the thermostat terminal functions. Before uninstalling the old thermostat take a picture of the wiring with your cell phone before removing the wires. This way you have a reference. At the minimum draw a picture of it referencing the wires, wire color and what terminal the wire is attached to what terminal. The photo and the drawing reference can be used later to make sure you wire the new thermostat properly. Make sure you do not make these same mistakes others make.

Air conditioners are different because the reversing valve and defrost controls are unnecessary. It is possible your system could have two transformers. It is rare but still possible.

CCC November 24, , 7: Assuming your local officials are competent, by pulling a permit you will ensure that the system is inspected by a qualified professional who will not sign off unless it is properly installed. Reply RLepage November 24, , 9: In some cities in BC, despite pulling a permit for work, this does not guarantee that an inspector will review the work. They usually assume that the work is done by a competent and trained individual and have therefore deem the work compliant.

Depends on what kind of work is being done, by whom, and under which jurisdiction. Fred Jenkins November 29, ,

Bk Needless to say, there really needs to be a better labeling or coloring system. In fact, thermostats should really go towards an IP system and use an Ethernet cable. Let me say that Nest support was awesome. I could talk with a clearly spoken woman who worked in Oklahoma and took the time to understand, address, research and resolve my issue promptly. She sent me an email to reply back with photos of the original thermostat wiring and my current wiring on the Nest which helped things along.

Heat Pump Thermostat Wiring Chart. This is for use for heatpumps. You should % make sure that you have a heat pump system and not an air conditioner with electric heating strips as it is a common mistake for people to misidentify their HVAC systems.

Unlike other types of furnaces, the heat pump furnace pulls the heat or cold from the air outside and distributes it through the house instead of simply heating cold air with a flame or heating element. Setting the thermostat on the heat pump furnace will tell it what temperature to maintain in your house. Setting the thermostat is simple, but you should know how to do it properly to avoid discomfort in your home and wasted energy that leads to high utility bills.

Setting the Thermostat 1 Locate your thermostat control panel. The thermostat is generally located in a central location in the house. This is the spot where the system measures the temperature of the surrounding air and determines whether or not to turn on the heat or begin cooling. The panel is sometimes round with a dial to select the temperature, or it may be a rectangular box with a digital readout and various buttons.

You will be able to see the current temperature in the house as well as the desired temperature setting. This will adjust the desired home temperature. If your home is too cold, adjust the temperature setting up a few degrees. For best efficiency and to save money, set your thermostat at 68 degrees while you are home in the cool weather months of the year. During hot months it is best to set your thermostat to a temperature as warm as you can tolerate without discomfort.

Several of us have said about the same thing. Maybe it would be clearer with a little more background on thermostats. The thermostat is wired to switch the power from the red to the white, yellow, and green as needed with the blue completing the circuit. Many have RH and RC to allow separate transformers for heating and cooling.

With just one red wire, jumper them.

A programmable thermostat lets you customize the heating and cooling of your home to your needs, ensuring the heat and air conditioning aren’t running when you don’t need them. You can set your system for one temperature when you’re at home, and another when you’re away.
